The Nevada dome
The biggest piece we've pulled from Virgin Valley lives in water permanently. Here's what's inside it — and why it will never be cut.

This is the piece from the Virgin Valley post: the large crystal opal pulled from Rainbow Ridge that lives in a sealed water dome. Here it is photographed through the glass with a light behind it. The dark streak running through the center is petrified wood — that's what the opal grew around and through over millions of years. The wood is still there. The silica didn't fully replace it, just infiltrated it. You're looking at an opal with its former self still embedded inside.
Why it stays in water
Virgin Valley opal formed in wet volcanic ash. For millions of years the water content of the surrounding bentonite clay kept the opal's internal moisture stable. Take a piece out and expose it to dry air, and the silica network dries unevenly — some zones faster than others. The differential shrinkage creates tension. Tension creates cracks. The process is called crazing, and once it starts, it doesn't stop.
The standard fix for display pieces is a water dome: a sealed glass or acrylic container filled with distilled water that keeps the opal at constant humidity and temperature. This piece has been in one since the day it came out of the ground.


Why it will never be cut
We get asked occasionally whether we'll cut this piece. We won't, for two reasons. First: the color would be lost. A cab shows only the top face. This piece fires in three dimensions — the color shifts completely as you rotate it, angle it, change the light. No cab could show that. Second: the piece would almost certainly craze immediately. The first wheel pass would heat the surface; moisture would flash out of that zone; the tension would crack it. Some pieces are worth more whole.
Some things are better left whole.
